L'histoire du Bengal

L'histoire du Bengal commence en 1963 en Arizona. Jean Mill, une généticienne passionnée de chat adopte une femelle chat léopard d'Asie qu'elle croise avec un chat noir. Ce fut la première hybridation entre un chat domestique et un léopard d'Asie. Puis Jean importa un petit léopard d'Inde avec lequel elle croisa son hybride, une femelle naquit appelée Kin-Kin. Malheureusement la lignée disparut.

Plusieurs années plus tard l'Université de Davis contacta Jean afin de lui proposer huit femelles hybrides nées d'un croisement entre un chat domestique et le fameux léopard d'Asie. Par la suite de nombreuses races furent utilisées pour créer la race Bengal comme le Mau Egyptien, l'American Shorthairs, le Burmeses et le Siamois.

La race Bengal était née, mais le travail de sélection était encore immense. Le problème majeur rencontré par les éleveurs était la stérilité des individus jusqu'à la 4ème génération. Le vrai challenge était de conserver le look sauvage sans sacrifier le caractère qui devait être doux et affectueux.

C'est en 1985 que Jean Mill présenta ses premiers chats en exposition féline avec un grand succès de la part du public. Peu de temps plus tard la TICA reconnut officiellement la race en championnat. En 1989 la première femelle de race bengal à être importée en France provenait de l'élevage de Jean Mill par Odile Caillard-Arnaux. La première naissance eut lieu en 1993. 

A ce jour le Bengal n'est toujours pas reconnue en CFA.

The history of Bengal began in 1963 in Arizona. Jean Mill, a cat geneticist passionate adopts a female Asian leopard cat she mates with a black cat. This was the first hybridization between a domestic cat and an Asian leopard. Jean then imported a small leopard in India with which she mate his hybrid, a female born called Kin Kin. Unfortunately the line disappeared.

Several years later the University of Davis contacted John to offer him eight hybrid females born of a cross between a domestic cat and the famous Asian Leopard. Subsequently many breeds were used to create the Bengal breed as the Egyptian Mau, American Shorthairs, the Burmeses and Siamese.

The Bengal breed was born, but the selection work was still immense. The major problem faced by farmers was the sterility of individuals to the 4th generation. The real challenge was to keep the wild look without sacrificing the character was to be gentle and affectionate.

 It was in 1985 that John Mill presented his first cat show cats with great success by the public. Shortly later TICA officially recognized the breed in the league. In 1989 the first bengal breed female to be imported into France came from cattery of Jean Mill by Odile Caillard-Arnaux. The first birth took place in 1993.

To date, the Bengal is still not recognized by CFA.
